Blues - Jazz swing - creole - world jazz

Armel Amiot - Cherbourg (Normandy, France)

Official release of the digital EP Dezertoj on 24 may 2024

Armel Amiot is unquestionably what can be called an eclectic musician. In the 80s, it was first as a guitarist and singer with the rock trio Porte 53, for three albums of original songs and more than 500 concerts. Then, from a rock singer he gradually became a jazz singer, without letting go of his guitar. He scoured the Parisian swinging jazz scenes with a large number of groups (Caveau de la Huchette, Petit Journal, Méridien).

A little later, it was the banjo that crossed his path when he was recruited by the group La Planche à Laver, made up of professional musicians from his region. From New Orleans jazz to West Indian beguines via acoustic funk, it was the transition to another level of visibility, since the group performed at many festivals in France, the West Indies, and sometimes abroad. With three albums, the second of which was recorded in New Orleans under the direction of the great banjo player and producer Don Vappie, it was an opportunity for Armel to rub shoulders with singing in the Creole language (Martinican, in particular), which was not without consequence on the current projects.

After returning to his piano for a few years to accompany French song, while continuing his activity as a banjoist-singer, Armel was preparing for a new musical direction.

Esperanto had in the meantime crossed his path, the seed had quietly germinated, and the idea of writing original songs in the international language was only waiting for the right time. As for many artists, it was the first lockdown which offered him the perspective and the time necessary for a new start.

It was the EP Banĝo Esperanto (2022) which was the gateway to Esperanto music for Armel !

Today, his new EP Dezertoj explores the myth of the desert, symbol of solitude and abandonment. We enter the desert as everything around us becomes depopulated, for lack of love, friendship, or self-confidence. We enter it, sometimes by surprise, sometimes of our own will, or even by a twist of fate.
The six songs on this EP come in pairs, hand in hand. Like yin and yang, or the two sides of a coin, since chance accompanies and colors all our choices.
